International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

International English Language Testing System is popularly known as IELTS in its abbreviated form. IELTS is an English language proficiency test; crucial for the non-native speakers, who want to move to English speaking countries for immigration or job purpose. The test has been popular all over the world for more than 20 years. IELTS is recognized by around 9000 organizations as a valid marker of true ability of the person to communicate and interact in English for varied purposes.  IELTS is accepted by almost all universities in the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Switzerland and Canada and it is a compulsory test in Australia. Many American Universities have also started accepting IELTS score in place of TOEFL. Around 2 million tests of IELTS are conducted every year from all over the world. There are more than 800 test centres in 140 countries. IELTS is a joint venture of British Council, Cambridge English &IDP Australia.

 

IELTS is based on assessing the following four skills:

Listening          Speaking          Reading          Writing


IELTS test has two major types; academic IELTS (For Job purpose) and general IELTS (For Immigration purpose). 


Listening and Speaking tests will be same for both of these types; but there is a slight difference between reading and writing topics of academic and general IELTS

 

The Rating of IELTS is as follows:

Reading 60 minutes 3 passages multiple choice questions 0 – 9 bands
Writing 60 minutes 2 writing tasks 0 – 9 bands
Listening 40 minutes Four sections and each section consists of 10 questions 0 – 9 bands
Speaking 11 to 14 minutes One to one interaction with the candidates that includes general and specific questions. 0 – 9 bands

 

Duration of Training: 35 Hours

 

The objective of reading test is to assess the analytical skills as well as the ability of skimming, scanning, intensive and extensive reading of the students.

The creative thinking and critical thinking of the test takers are assessed through their ability to write on different topics assigned to them. In both Academic and General IELTS, the number of writing tasks is same and the word limit is also same but the topics are different.

Listening and speaking tests aim at assessing the skills of the test takers to interact in English in their day today life.

A good IELTS score signifies that you speak, read, write and understand English as a global language and you are suitable to cope with the English culture and environment.
